A pair of California newts (Taricha torosa), photographed while courting in Napa Co., CA. The lighter-colored individual with smooth skin is the male, the darker-colored individual with rough skin is the female. These individuals were in the shallow edge of a pond. On the right side of the photo, you can see an egg mass already laid by another California Newt.
